The structure of your expository essay will vary according to the scope of your assignment and the demands of your topic. It’s worthwhile to plan out your structure before you start, using an essay outline. A common structure for a short expository essay consists of five paragraphs: An introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Read the following topic sentences. They all contain a topic (in bold) and a controlling idea (underlined). When your paragraphs contain a clearly stated topic sentence such as one of the following, your reader will know what to expect and, therefore, understand your ideas better. Make yours one to remember with these topic sentence examples. Note that each example includes both a topic and a controlling idea. Topic Sentence: A topic sentence communicates the paragraph's main idea, while the following sentences are used to strengthen that point and provide additional evidence. Step #3: The First and Last Sentence Matter. If you're unsure whether you've interpreted the main idea or topic sentence correctly, look at the final sentence of the paragraph as well.
The main idea or topic sentence of a paragraph should state the topic and the controlling idea. The topic is what the paragraph is about and the controlling idea is the directions the writer wants to go with the topic. For example, the topic of a paragraph that a student chooses to write could be video games. However, this is not a topic sentence.
